Petalite, also known as Castorite, is a member of the feldspathoid group of minerals which includes spodumene, lepidolite, and tourmaline. The rarest form of Petalite occurs in gem-quality crystals. Although colorless, glassy crystals can make stunning faceted jewelry pieces.
Petalite was first discovered in 1800 by Brazilian mineralogist JB de Andradae Silva (1763-1838). The name Petalite is derived from the Greek words petalon, meaning leaf, (a reference to its distinctive leaf-like basal cleavage) and lithos, meaning stone.
Petalite is purported to be soothing for the emotional body. Often worn or carried to balance emotions and calm the energies of trauma. This calming quality may be an attribute of its Lithium content as Petalite is an important ore of lithium. In use, Petalite is believed to impart a feeling of wellbeing, safety and security.
